SP-1 Project

Deployable Network Node

SP-1 reduced a 35kg multi-part communications setup to a sub-15kg deployable network node, enabling 1-person handling while reducing transport cost, setup time and deployment complexity.

Client

Confidential technology partner operating in defence and critical infrastructure environments.

Objective

Develop a self-contained, rapidly deployable network communications hub that could support secure connectivity in remote, temporary or challenging operating environments. The system needed to replace a heavier multi-part setup with a compact unit light enough for 1-person handling, reducing transport cost, setup time and deployment complexity.

Challenge

Field teams often need to establish reliable connectivity quickly, but separate network components can create a slow, heavy and error-prone setup process.

The existing approach required multiple items of equipment with a combined weight of around 35kg. This made transport more expensive, increased handling requirements and slowed deployment on site.

The requirement was to condense a complex network setup into a single portable system weighing under 15kg, while still protecting the core network, power and communications equipment needed for field use.

Solution

SP-1 engineered the Deployable Network Node, a fully integrated communications system housed within a ruggedised enclosure.

We designed a custom internal mounting and wiring system to interconnect high-performance networking components into a cohesive plug-and-play unit. The design reduced a 35kg multi-part setup to a sub-15kg deployable system, enabling 1-person handling and reducing transport cost.

The internal layout prioritised secure mounting, shock protection and thermal airflow to help critical hardware remain protected and operational in demanding environments.

Key features included:

  • Integrated firewall, network switch and secure communications hardware
  • Built-in 4G router and high-gain Wi-Fi antenna
  • Power over Ethernet injector for peripheral device support
  • Custom internal mounting and wiring system
  • Shock-protected internal component layout
  • Thermal airflow management for critical hardware
  • Sub-15kg integrated system, reduced from around 35kg
  • 1-person lift and deployment
  • Ruggedised enclosure for field use
  • Plug-and-play startup with minimal configuration

Outcome

The finished deployable network node gave the client a lighter, cleaner and more reliable way to transport, protect and deploy a complete communications system. By reducing a 35kg multi-part setup to a sub-15kg integrated unit, SP-1 made the system practical for 1-person handling and reduced the cost and complexity of moving equipment between sites. The result was a faster deployment process, fewer separate items to manage and a more robust communications platform for demanding environments.
