Vodafone Foundation, a charitable organisation delivering connectivity and education programs to remote and crisis-affected areas.
Objective
Create a "school in a box" - a fully self-sufficient, rapidly deployable digital classroom capable of transforming any space into an educational environment within minutes.
Challenge
Delivering digital education in refugee camps and remote regions requires complex hardware that is usually heavy, fragile, and dependent on unreliable power grids. The solution needed to be robust enough to survive harsh environments, light enough to be transported as a single piece of luggage (under 32kg), and capable of powering a full suite of digital tools without immediate access to electricity.
Solution
SP-1 developed a comprehensive hardware integration solution housed within a specially modified, ruggedised case. We designed the internal architecture to securely house and power a complex ecosystem of devices, ensuring thermal efficiency and shock protection during transit. The system integrates a robust power management system that allows the entire classroom to run off a single power source or its internal battery backup.
Charge, store, and transport up to 25 tablets
Integrated 3G Wi-Fi router and local education content server
Built-in Bluetooth speaker and portable projector
Internal UPS backup battery for off-grid operation
Single-plug charging architecture for rapid deployment
Outcome
The Instant Classroom reduced deployment time to just 20 minutes, allowing educators to set up a digital learning environment almost anywhere. This durable, all-in-one solution has been successfully deployed in refugee camps across Africa, providing thousands of children with access to quality digital education.
