Instant Network Mini Backpack Telecoms Kit

SP-1 integrated the Instant Network Mini, a backpack-based emergency telecoms kit designed to restore basic 2G voice and SMS connectivity in disaster response environments.

Objective

Integrate a complete emergency mobile communications system into a backpack-sized kit that could be carried by a single responder. The system needed to restore basic 2G voice and SMS connectivity in disaster zones where roads, power and communications infrastructure may be damaged or inaccessible.

Challenge

After a natural disaster, communications infrastructure can be damaged, overloaded or completely unavailable. At the same time, access roads may be blocked, making larger portable network systems difficult to transport into affected areas.

Vodafone Foundation needed a compact, self-contained network kit that could be carried on foot, transported as hand luggage and deployed quickly by trained responders.

The system needed to combine telecoms hardware, antenna equipment, power management and backup energy sources into a wearable format without making the kit too heavy or complex to deploy.

The kit needed to support:

  • rapid deployment in disaster response environments
  • basic 2G GSM voice and SMS connectivity
  • backpack transport by a single responder
  • internal battery operation
  • solar charging for extended field use
  • AC mains and 12V DC charging options
  • protected storage for network hardware and accessories
  • simple setup in remote or infrastructure-poor locations

Solution

SP-1 integrated the Instant Network Mini as a compact backpack-based telecoms kit.

The system brought together a 2G GSM network, antenna hardware, internal battery, power management, solar charging and supporting accessories into a portable format weighing around 11 kg. The layout was designed to keep the kit practical to carry, fast to set up and suitable for use in challenging field conditions.

Power was a central part of the design. The system included an internal battery for short-term operation, with a deployable 62 W solar panel and solar controller to support off-grid charging. AC mains and 12V DC inputs provided additional charging flexibility when vehicles, generators or local power sources were available.

By integrating the communications hardware and power system into 1 backpack kit, the Instant Network Mini gave responders a way to restore basic mobile connectivity before larger infrastructure could be deployed.

Outcome

By condensing network hardware, power management, battery operation and solar charging into 1 backpack-based kit, SP-1 helped create a system that could be carried by a single responder and deployed quickly when conventional infrastructure was unavailable. The result was a practical emergency telecoms platform for restoring voice and SMS connectivity during the early stages of humanitarian response.
